Guided Night Kayak Tours

Few visitors to the central Florida area are aware of the fact that the Indian River Lagoon is home to truly unique and magical natural phenomena. The nighttime waters glow! During the summer months on the Indian and Banana Rivers every movement in the water produces light! The movement of your paddle or a school of fish leaves a blue-green trail. The movement of manatees and stingrays leave a slow-moving glow. Every movement in the water produces light with bioluminescence. It’s a great time of year for a sunset/evening kayak tour.

Calypso Kayaking also offers a Comb Jelly Bio Kayak Tour. These tours run at night (so you can see them glow), These jellies do not sting, but they do give off a bioluminescent green light. You will see them give off sparks of light with every paddle stroke!

Comb Jellyfish Night Time Kayaking Tours

Calypso Kayaking offers a Comb Jelly Bio Kayak Tour. These tours run at night (so you can see them glow). These jellies do not sting, but they do. give off a bioluminescent green light. You will see them give off sparks of light with every paddle stroke!

The Comb Jelly Bio Kayak Tour

These jellies don’t light up during the day so this is a night tour starting an hour after sunset and last for 1.5 hours.  Reservations are required so book here on the web site or call to make a reservation. Comb jellies are beautiful, oval-shaped animals with eight rows of tiny comblike plates that they beat to move themselves through the water. As they swim, the comb rows diffract light to produce a shimmering, rainbow effect.

A comb jelly is not actually a jellyfish at all -though both have a similar appearance. Interestingly, they are not even closely-linked relatives. Just like jellyfish however, the comb jelly is a very ancient animal. According to Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the comb jelly is at least 500 million years old.
